The Give Back Yoga Foundation is a non profit yoga organization dedicated to sharing the transformational benefits of this practice with those who might otherwise never experience yoga. We do this by supporting and funding certified teachers in all traditions to offer the teachings of yoga to underserved and under-resourced communities and populations.
GBYF Core Programs
Yoga For Veterans & PTSD | Give Back Yoga supports veterans, service members and military families through Mindful Yoga Therapy, a program designed to help veterans find a calm and steady body and mind through the practice of yoga, meditation, breath work, yoga nidra and meditation. Each practice is a tool that veterans can use to cope with PTSD or post-traumatic stress. Together they form a comprehensive system — a “toolbox” — that can help warriors transition into a life of strength and resilience.
Yoga for Prisoners | Today, 2.25 million men and women – 1 in 100 adults – are in U.S. prisons. 60% of released prisoners return to prison within 3 years. To truly help these men and women turn their lives around, we need to do something different. Give Back Yoga helps incarcerated men and women build a better life through the Prison Yoga Project, a program of trauma-informed yoga that’s taught as a mindfulness practice. Through the practice, students can restore the connection between their mind, body and heart, experience self-compassion and empathy for others, and take responsibility for their actions. They can also begin to change trauma-induced, unconscious behavioral patterns, develop skills for impulse control, and address mood disorders, violence, addiction and PTSD, reducing the likelihood that they will return to jail.
Yoga for Eating Disorders | An estimated 24 million Americans suffer from bulimia, binge eating or anorexia — a disorder with the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. The average cost of treatment adds up to $1,250 per day, with only one in 10 individuals receiving treatment and 50% likely to relapse after discharge. Give Back Yoga helps people overcome eating disorders, and helps to foster positive body image, through the Eat Breathe Thrive program. Through skills like tracking hunger and fullness signals, coping with difficult emotions and cultivating a positive body image, Eat Breathe Thrive supports long-term recovery from disordered eating.
Yoga for Addiction Recovery | In the US, an estimated 1 in 3 people are dealing with an addiction themselves, or are severely affected by the addiction of someone close to them. Give Back Yoga helps people to overcome addiction and prevent relapse through Yoga of 12-Step Recovery, a program that integrates the wisdom of yoga with the practice tools of 12-step models. Through weekly meetings, Y12SR offers a safe place on the mat where trauma can be released, healing can take place, and those in recovery can reconnect with all parts of themselves, and with the world.
Yoga for Cancer | Cancer touches everyone. In America, 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 women will personally experience cancer in their lifetime. Give Back Yoga helps cancer survivors and patients to support recovery, emotional wellbeing and longterm health through yoga4cancer, a program that integrates specialized yoga methodology with other treatments. By stimulating the immune system through movement and connecting survivors with community, yoga4cancer helps survivors to manage side effects of treatment, increase survival rates and decrease recurrence rates.
